Every hearing-impaired individual should have access to the services they need.
The House Institute Foundation provides direct medical service to high-need communities worldwide by sending teams of surgeons, audiologists, and public health professionals on projects that support and invigorate long-term, sustainable programs.
Upcoming Projects
Although our international service projects are suspended due to COVID-19 safety concerns, we look forward to rescheduling our in-country efforts once it is advisable to do so. The House Institute had planned to join our partners in El Salvador in the spring of 2020 to provide hearing testing, hearing aid fittings, surgeries, and training for local medical doctors in the area. This service trip will now occur in 2021 pending travel recommendations. During this trip, our team will pay special attention to otosclerosis, an ear condition resulting in severe hearing loss that is rampant in that area. In addition to treating this disease, we aim to collect data that can help identify the underlying causes of the unusually high incidence of otosclerosis in this region.
Fellowship Program
House neurotology fellows are encouraged to travel on a humanitarian trip during the second year of their fellowship as part of their training. These experiences foster attitudes of humanism, cultural proficiency, understanding of effective delivery of health care in limited-resource environments, and professional conduct and accountability.
In 2019, Dr. Kathryn Noonan traveled to Nicaragua to provide care. Read her story here
Our goal is to set a cultural standard in the medical community that grows into a nation-wide movement where all graduating neurotologists commit to contributing to global treatment and policy advancements in a chosen area of study or geographic region over the course of their career.
Hearing at Home
We are working to improve the lives of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in underserved communities in our own backyard. Initiatives currently under development will increase hearing health awareness and launch several new projects with high impact potential. One such project is to dispense reduced cost hearing aids with an innovative delivery system that reaches vulnerable populations who need it the most. More information to come.
